Youth Programs

The Lake County Recreation Department offers year-round sports, activities, and events for children and teens. These programs are designed to expose youth to a variety of recreational activities in a supervised and safe environment. Our focus is on teamwork, sportsmanship, skill development, self-esteem and most of all, having fun! For additional youth programs not sponsored by the Recreation Department, please see our Recreation Links page.

Accepting kids as young as 5, experienced swimming instructor Cheryl Talbot, will help your child feel more comfortable in the water by introducing skills one-by-one, customized to each student's level. You will be amazed at the progress each week, as Cheryl's unique approach teaches them that "yes you can!" Days and times will be determined just prior to classes, and are based on the ages/skills of those who register. Be sure to express your preference for either Wednesday or Saturdays, if you have one and we will do our best to accommodate you!

The Lake County Recreation Department is excited to continue the programming of youth basketball in Lake County. Boys and girls in grades K-5 will have the opportunity to improve their skills in a fun, safe environment. Participants will practice once per week and have games on Friday evenings. Registration will begin in November and games/practices will start in January and run through March.

Beginning Diving I
Have you ever wanted to learn how to do a proper front dive off the diving board? Or to increase your height when jumping? If so, consider signing up for our beginner diving class. Accomplished diving coach Justin Richardson will teach you the basics to help improve your technique no matter what your age! All students must pass a swim test to enroll!

Climbing Club
Climbing Club allows participants to climb in a supportive and motivating environment. Challenging but not overwhelming, this program will accommodate individual needs while helping develop teamwork and leadership skills. Participants must have taken On Belay or have prior climbing experience.
Date: February 7 - March 21 (no class 3/14)

Take Aim
The pull of  bow, the "thunk" of the arrow... bulls eye! The LCRD youth archery program will provide participants with the basic skills and techniques necessary to become successful beginner archers. All equipment is provided; however, students who own bows are welcome to bring them to class.
Date: March 6 - April 17, Tuesdays (no class on 3/20)

Join us for this great program to learn the fundamentals of volleyball. Participants will be divided by grade level to work on passing, serving, setting, hitting, and court positions through a variety of drills and games. Participants who are ready will also work on base/free ball and rotations. Players will have the opportunity for game play by attending a CARA tournament.
Dates: March 15 - May 10, Thursdays (no class 3/22)
Time: 4-5:00pm (grades 2-4) and 5-6:00pm (grades 5-6)

Spring Break Gymnastics Camp12_bars_may17_16.jpg
Jane Harelson is teaming up with the Recreation Department to lead a gymnastics camp during Spring Break 2018 for ages 6 and up. Participants will learn and practice all basic floor skills including rolls, cartwheels, head and handstands as well as skills on the uneven bars and balance beam. Jane welcomes participants who are new to gymnastics, as well as those with higher level skills.

Spring Youth Soccer
Join us as we continue to bring Lake County youth spring soccer. Participants is this league will practice 1-2 times a week depending on their age and play games on Saturdays against Buena Vista, Salida, and Fairplay. This coed league provides the opportunity to learn and develop fundamental skills in a safe, fun environment. Participants will receive instruction on basic skills and rules of the game during practice sessions and be offered game time to utilize these techniques.

Cost: $35 a jersey or $50 with a jersey

All classes will include an age appropriate introduction to ballet technique and dance terminology. Classes are structured for learning and fun with a focus on appreciating the performing arts. Students will be grouped by age.

Spring Tennis 
Join us for our spring session of tennis, held in the 6th Street Gym. This program will introduce the skills of tennis including; how to use a racquet, the different strokes (lob, volley, backhand), serving technique, and basic rules. Learn new skills and a game you can enjoy for life!
