Youth Programs

The Lake County Recreation Department offers year-round sports, activities, and events for children and teens. These programs are designed to expose youth to a variety of recreational activities in a supervised and safe environment. Our focus is on teamwork, sportsmanship, skill development, self-esteem and most of all, having fun! For additional youth programs not sponsored by the Recreation Department, please see our Recreation Links page.

The LCRD youth archery program will provide participants with the basic skills and techniques necessary to become successful beginner archers. All equipment is provided; however, students who own bows are welcome to bring them to class. 
 
Dates: May 30 - August 1 (no class 6/27 or 7/4)
Times: 4:15-5pm (ages 5-7) 5-5:45pm (ages 8+) 
Location: Rocky Mountain Bowman Archery Range

Summer Swim Lessons: Ages 3-7
Get comfortable in the water and have more fun! Our Learn-to-Swim Program for ages 3-7, teaches participans how to swim skillfully and safely. Each level includes training in basic water safety with a defined skill progression between levels. Each session is limited to 6 students for better individual attention and maximum improvement.
 
Session 2: FULL
Time: Between 4-6pm, Monday & Wednesdays
Ages: 3-7

Summer Swim ClubSwim Lessons 2012 013.jpg
Improve your swimming skills with this intense 5-week program. Participants will work on stroke development and flip turns to become faster, and more efficient swimmers. Team building and fitness will also be part of the fun! Must be able to swim 25 yards (one length) of either front crawl or breaststroke to enroll.
 
Session 2: July 11 - August 10
Time: 9:00 - 10:00am, Tuesday - Thursday
Ages: 8-17
Cost: Pass Holder $50, Non-Pass Holder $60

Revived for the summer of 2017, are youth golf lessons with the Lake County Recreation Department. In partnership with the Mount Massive Golf Course and Michael O'Leary, we are pleased to be providing lessons for both beginner and intermediate golfers. Mr. O'Leary has over 29 years of experience coaching golf, including several State Championship winning individuals. Those in grades K-6 with no previous golf experience should register as beginners, while those in grades 7+ or having taken golf lessons in previous years should register for the intermediate session. Private lessons are also available by contacting Mr. O'Leary at 913-449-1464.

Join us as we bring you Run Jump Throw. This great program is a product of USATF and will give youth, ages 5+, an introduction to running form, jumping activities and throwing technique. Participants will also be given the opportunity to use their skills at a real track meet in July.

Come try out the new tennis courts at Huck Finn Park! This program will introduce the skills of tennis including; how to use a racquet, the different strokes (lob, volley, backhand) serving technique and basic rules. Learn new skills and a game you can enjoy for life!

Junior Lifeguard1087.jpg
The Red Cross Junior Lifeguard Course is designed to help participants develop the swimming skills required to pass the Lifeguarding course prerequisites. In addition to swimming skills, the course also introduces participants to lifesaving skills, such as in-water rescues, how to use a rescue tube, first aid, CPR and an AED. Participants will also have the opportunity to shadow lifeguards at the Lake County Aquatic Center, to gain job skills which will help them be ready to apply as lifeguards. Participants who successfully complete the course will earn a free 15-visit pass to the Aquatic Center. Please contact Judy for more information on class prerequisites.

Hone your skills, get some exercise, make new friends and get a chance at making a big play! In the league, kids will get the chance to throw passes, make catches, pull flags, run for touchdowns, and maybe even get a Pick 6. Teams will be separated by the players grade for the 2017 school year and all teams will be coached by volunteers.

Fall Youth Soccer
Join us as we continue to bring Lake County youth spring soccer. Participants is this league will practice 1-2 times a week depending on their age and play games on Saturdays against Buena Vista, Salida, and Fairplay. This coed league provides the opportunity to learn and develop fundamental skills in a safe, fun environment. Participants will receive instruction on basic skills and rules of the game during practice sessions and be offered game time to utilize these techniques.

Accepting kids as young as 3, experienced swimming instructor Cheryl Talbot, will help your child feel more comfortable in the water by introducing skills one-by-one, customized to each student's level. You will be amazed at the progress each week, as Cheryl's unique approach teaches them that "yes you can!" Days and times will be determined just prior to classes, and are based on the ages/skills of those who register. Be sure to express your preference for either Wednesday or Saturdays, if you have one and we will do our best to accommodate you!
 
Session 1: September 6 - October 11, Wednesdays

All classes will include an age appropriate introduction to ballet technique and dance terminology. Classes are structured for learning and fun with a focus on appreciating the performing arts. Students will be grouped by age.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to do a proper front dive off the diving board? Or to increase your height when jumping? If so, consider signing up for our beginner diving class. Accomplished diving coach Justin Richardson will teach you the basics to help improve your technique no matter what your age! Contact Judy at 719-486-6874 to enroll and receive details about days and times as they firm up. All students must pass a swim test to enroll!

If you love climbing to the highest point or are just interested in trying climbing for the first time, this is the program for you. Gear is provided and pre-registration is required as class space is limited.
