Youth Programs

The Lake County Recreation Department offers year-round sports, activities, and events for children and teens. These programs are designed to expose youth to a variety of recreational activities in a supervised and safe environment. Our focus is on teamwork, sportsmanship, skill development, self-esteem and most of all, having fun! For additional youth programs not sponsored by the Recreation Department, please see our Recreation Links page.

Junior Swim Club
Ready for the next level? Has your swim lesson instructor recommended that your child is ready for a challenge? Then Junior Swim Club is the program for you! Junior Swim Club will help your child become a stronger, more confident swimmer, through stroke development and breath control. Questions about whether this program is right for your child? The Lake County Recreation Department is excited to bring youth basketball to Lake County.  Boys and girls will have the opportunity to learn and improve their skills in a fun, safe environment.  Participants will practice 1-2 times a week depending on their age and play games 1 day a week.  Registration will begin in November and games and practices will start in January and run through March.  
Dates: January 7 - March 9
Practice Time: Between 4 - 8:00pm

Grades: K - 5
Practice Location: 6th Street Gym or Westpark Elementary

This fun program focuses on basic skill development, from skating to stick handling, to passing, and shooting.  The Recreation Department does provide some equipment on a first come first serve basis.  Please note that helmets and shin pads are required and hockey sticks are provided or can be purchased at the Huck Finn Warming Hut.

Swim Lessons 
Accepting kids as young as 5, experienced swimming instructor Taylor Trelka, will help your child feel more comfortable in the water by introducing skills one-by-one, customized to each student's level. You will be amazed at the progress each week, as Taylor's unique approach teaches them that "yes you can!" Days and times will be determined just prior to classes, and are based on the ages/skills of those who register.

Beginning Diving II
So you've mastered your approach and front half-somersault and you’re ready to take it up a notch. In this class you’ll learn how to do a front 1 and 1/2 will somersault. This class will also teach you how to do a proper backwards line up. After you have become proficient with back line ups you'll start to learn how to do back dives and inward dives. Accomplished diver (all-American and Missouri all-state) and experienced diving coach, Justin Richardson, will teach you the basics and help you improve your technique, no matter what your age.

Junior Lifeguarding
This 6-week course has a strong focus on developing swimming skills to help participants meet the Lifeguarding course prerequisite. The course also introduces participants to lifesaving skills, such as in-water rescues, use of a rescue tube, and first aid, CPR and AED. Taking this course does not obligate participants to become lifeguards.

Summer Swim Club
Improve your swimming skills with this intense 2-day-a-week, 5-week club. We will work on stroke development and flip turns to make you a more efficient and faster swimmer, and team-building for fun and fitness! A great way to start your day, Tuesday through Thursday. Must be able to swim 25 yards (one length) of either the front crawl or breast stroke, to be enrolled.

Junior Rangers
Join the summer fun with the Arkansas Headwater Recreation Areas Jr. Ranger Program.  Kids are invited to investigate habits, habitats, and have fun!  Those who attend at least 5 classes are eligible to participate in a free rafting trip the first week of August.

In partnership with the Mount Massive Golf Course and Michael O’Leary, we are pleased to be providing lessons for both beginner and intermediate golfers.  Mr.  O’Leary has over 29 years of experience coaching golf, including several State Championship winning individuals.  Those in grades k-6 with no previous golf experience should register as beginners, while those in grades 7+, or having taken golf lessons in previous years should register for the intermediate session.  Private lessons are also available by contacting Mr. O’Leary at 913-449-1464.

Back for the summer of 2018!  This summer we will be rolling out the mats for more tumbling fun!  Participants will be divided into groups and rotated through instruction on the balance beam, bars, floor, and vault.

Fall Soccer
Join us as we continue to bring Lake County youth fall soccer.  Participants in this league will practice 1-2 times a week depending on age and play games on Saturdays against Buena Vista, Salida, and Fairplay.  This coed league provides opportunity to learn and develop fundamental skills in a safe, fun environment.  Participants will receive instruction on basic skills and rules of the game during practice sessions and be offered game time to utilize these techniques.

All classes will include an age appropriate introduction to ballet technique and dance terminology. Classes are structured for learning and fun with a focus on appreciating the performing arts.  Students will be grouped by age.

On Belay
If you love climbing to the highest point or are just interested in trying climbing for the first time, this is the program for you.  Gear is provided and pre-registration is required, as class space is limited.
