Kids Programs

Hot News! Registration for March/April youth programs has started!  Programs include swim lessons, archery, and gymnastics.  Download registration form here.  The field may be buried in snow, but registration for this summer's Challenger British Soccer Camp is also underway.

The Recreation Department offers year-round sports, activities, and events for children and teens. With safety as the cornerstone of everything we do, parents and guardians can rest assured that their children are having a safe, structured experience. And kids can rest assured that they will have a great time. For additional youth programs not sponsored by the Recreation Department, please see our Recreation Links page.

"Stick and Puck" Hockey Program
The 2010 program is wrapping up!  Thanks for a great season, kids!
Learn the basics of skating and hockey in this exciting new program!   Program runs from January 14 to February 18 on Thursday evenings, 5:30-6:15pm.  Cost is $25 and includes t-shirt.  Skate rental extra.  Helmet (either hockey or bicycle) and stick required.  Sticks available for $15 at rink.  Download registration form.
 
 
Robin Hood Archery Program
Brand new for 2010 is our new children's archery program!  A parent is required to attend the first night of this program.  Safety and responsibility will be the primary focus of this fun program.  Download registration form.
 
Times: 6-7pm, Thursday evenings, March 18-May 6.
Cost:    $30 (includes t-shirt)
 
 
Swimming Lessons
Our mission is to make sure that every Lake County child feels comfortable and safe in the water, and we are fortunate to have some exceptionally qualified instructors to help toward this end. Please visit the Pool home page for the latest information about swimming lessons.
 
 
Ice Skating Lessons
How better to spend Leadville’s long winters than gliding gracefully across the ice? Lessons will help your child become a proficient and safe skater.
 
Time:  Lessons have finished for the season.  If there is sufficient interest, we'll launch a second session.  Let us know!
Cost:    $3 per session plus rink admission ($20 punch cards available for 10 sessions)
 
 
Play Group
Moms and Dads love this opportunity to get out of the house and let the kids romp around in the Sixth Street Gym. Parents must remain in attendance to help monitor the activities. Lots of fun balls, equipment and tumbling mats will be provided by the Department. This program is for children age 5 and younger.
 
Times: 9:30-11am, Wednesday mornings
Cost:    FREE!
 
 
Gymnastics Program
We’re rolling out the mats for another session of winter tumbling fun! The Sixth Street Gym is home to this popular weekly activity. Children are divided into age groups, and rotate through instruction in balance beam, tumbling and bars. Program fee includes a t-shirt!  Download registration form.
 
Times:             Wednesdays, 5:30-6:15pm (ages 4-8) and 6:30-7:15pm (ages 9+), from March 17 to May 12.
Cost:                $40 per child
 
 
Dance Program
Unfortunately, we have been unable to locate an instructor for this activity.  Please let us know if you are interested in helping.
Give your kids a winter full of music and movement! Our instructors will introduce participants to a wide variety of dance styles and steps—ranging from jazz to hip-hop to ballroom. This is a great opportunity to give your kids a passion that will follow them for life! There will also be a Mommy & Me dance program for children ages 18 months to 3 years.

Drop-In Indoor Soccer
Indoor soccer is a kick—just ask any kid! This winter, the goals will pile up on Saturday mornings at the Sixth Street Gym. This program is limited to children GRADE 4 and younger. Parents are welcome to join the fun and corral the chaos! A second program for children GRADE 5 and older will be formed later in the winter. Stay tuned for those details.

Dutch Henri Sledding Hill
Dutch Henri Sledding Hill is the highest, fastest sledding hill in all of Colorado—and it’s just a one minute drive south of downtown on Highway 24! We’ve also added a safer, shorter Kiddy Hill for the younger sledders. This winter the Recreation Department is excited to offer TUBE RENTAL on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-5pm! You’ll cruise in style and comfort on our brand new, deluxe tubes! As always, if you bring your own sled, the hill is completely free.

Challenger British Soccer Camp

 Future Panthers Soccer Program
Season I of the FP Soccer Program ended on October 11 with four fantastic final matches! Over 90 children participated the program. The next County-sponsored outdoor soccer activities for kids will likely be next summer—when the weather turns warm! Stay tuned.
 
 
Future Panthers Flag Football Program
Season I of the FP Football Program was a great success, with youngsters enjoying the speedy new turf at Lake County Community Park! We’ll look forward to seeing all the young gridiron stars again next fall for more flag football action.
 
 
Teen Nights
In cooperation with such entities as Full Circle, the Lake County School District, and Boogie Down Productions, the Recreation Department holds regular Teen Nights where teens can cut loose in a fun, safe environment. Teen Nights are usually held at the Sixth Street Gym, so that dancing and sports activities can take place side by side. Stay tuned for upcoming dates.
 
 
Summer Recreation Program
This program provides children ages 4-13 with an activity-packed schedule of summer events. With morning and afternoon time slots and sessions running from June to August, parents can cover their child care needs while knowing that their kids are enjoying fun art projects, sports activities, special excursions, and healthy snacks. Check back soon for 2010 dates.
