Lake County Landfill Information

Lake County Seal

Dear Lake County:

Recently we had to make a few changes at our landfill due to current staffing levels. We understand a misstep in communicating these changes has caused some inconvenience to Lake County residents, so we are committed to communicating changes better in the future.
Currently the landfill is open from Tuesday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM and Saturday, 8 AM to 12 PM. The yellow bag drop off and recycling locations are still available at Community Field and by Fire Station Two (CR10).

The changes in landfill operating hours are solely due to staffing shortages, and there is not any permanent plan to reduce the level of service to the community. Currently there are three full time employees and only one employee that has the required CDL to operate the roll off truck, which is a reduction of over 50% of staffing levels required to operate the landfill daily, as state regulations require the county to have the trash in the landfill compacted and covered daily. We are actively recruiting candidates for hire to address this staffing shortage and are looking at other potential solutions to keep the landfill operational within state compliance requirements.

We understand there have been a lot of rumors circulating about the landfill programs and use. Please know that there has been no discussion about removing the yellow bag program. To the contrary, we have been working with our staff to make bags more available to community members and visitors to keep our landscape clean. In a worst-case situation where we don’t have a CDL driver to move roll offs from the drop off and recycling locations, the trash roll offs for yellow bags will remain available 24-7 at the landfill.

Recycling centers will also remain open. Please remember to wash your plastics prior to recycling to avoid bins being put into the fenced area of the landfill.
We know that this change has come fast and has left limited options for everyone to accommodate the change. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we navigate the County’s options.

Thank you,
Lake County Commissioners
